Today something special happened. I was reminded of God’s grace, I also received my black belt in Tae Kwon Do (TKD). How are the two related, you might ask? Simply put, I didn’t deserve it. I didn’t earn it. Now this is something of a matter of opinion as my Tae Kwon Do Association thought I deserved it, earned it if you will; but I didn’t take the normal path to get there. Most people move up through the ranks by periodically testing and showing competence at various rank levels, which I did until near the end. You see my TKD Instructor died of cancer before I reached Black Belt and I took over for him and taught TKD the last 11 years at our Home School Co-op and then retired from teaching there after our last child graduated. My TKD Association and Black Belt board members felt I had shown enough merit to deserve the black belt rank and so surprised me with a Black Belt testing ceremony. One black belt board member drove over 7 hours one way to be here and the others drove hours through a snow storm to get here. I was humbled, amazed, shocked, and reminded of God’s grace. He surprises us with His grace when we don’t deserve it. He goes the extra mile to be with us and support us. All I could think of was God’s grace. Wow! God is good.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV
